IT Asset Disposition vs. Electronics Recycling
Frequently in our industry the terms “IT Asset Disposition” and “Electronics Recycling” are used interchangeably, suggesting they are synonymous. They are not. Electronics Recycling is one facet of the broader concept of IT Asset Disposition (ITAD).
Electronics Recycling is the process of disassembling electronics to the component level and then processing those components (or selling them to a downstream processor) to remove materials of value. Electronics Recycling also involves the responsible handling of Universal Waste and other hazardous materials.
For many in our industry, Electronics Recycling is their expertise and focus. They know how to pull every penny out of a piece of equipment. Many of these companies grew out of the metals recycling industry. Frequently these organizations will have the term “Recycling” right in their name. There is nothing wrong with that…it is their focus.
ITAD has a much broader scope. Along with Electronics Recycling it includes value-added services like Secure Data Destruction, IT Asset Value Recovery, Specialized Logistics and Customized Reporting. As an ITAD specialist, our focus is to provide simple yet customized solutions to our customers that offer all these services. Electronics Recycling is important, but it is just one piece of a comprehensive ITAD solution.
